AMESD (Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development Africa)

Launched in 2007, AMESD is scheduled to be implemented until 2012. AMESD is funded to the tune of 21 million euros by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION through the 9th EDF Intra-ACP (8 million euros), the Regional Indicative Programme of the 9th EDF CEMAC (2 million euros), ECOWAS (3 mn euros), SADC (3 million euros) and COMESA IGAD and IOC (5 million euros). The program is managed by the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. A steering committee composed of key stakeholders AMESD ie the five Regional Economic Communities (ECOWAS, SADC, CEMAC, IGAD, IOC), the ACP Secretariat and Commissioner REA (AUC), sets the program guidelines.

The goal is to provide AMESD all African nations means they need to manage their environment more effectively and sustainably. More importantly, AMESD aims to improve the lives and prospects of the 350 million people that has disadvantaged Africa and whose livelihood depends heavily on their environment.

AMESD aims to provide policy makers at national, Regional Economic Communities and African Union Commission full access to environmental data and indicators they need to improve national and regional policies and decision making.

The initiative follows on AMESD program logic of the Preparation for Use of MSG in Africa (PUMA), extending the operational use of technologies of Earth observation satellite applications to environmental monitoring and climate. It will also be the precursor of the extension program of the European Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) in Africa.
